PERTH ZOO PRIVACY POLICY (GENERAL)

This Privacy Policy (Policy) explains how your information is collected and used by the Zoological Parks Authority (Perth Zoo).

By using our website, and/or providing your personal information to us by any other means, you consent to us handling your personal information in accordance with this Policy.

This Policy is based on and is consistent with the National Privacy Principles published by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner. The National Principles may be viewed on the Australian Information Commissioner’s website at www.privacy.gov.au.

1. Collection of Statistical Information

When you visit the Perth Zoo website, a record of your visit is kept for statistical and research purposes. Similar records may be collected when you use any of the interactive features found on this website.

The Perth Zoo website records your visit and logs information including the following for statistical purposes:

  • your computer's IP and/or server address and top-level domain name;
  • date and time of the visit;
  • pages accessed and documents downloaded;
  • object size;
  • transaction type;
  • number of milliseconds that the transfer required;
  • previous site visited;
  • type of browser used;
  • browser capabilities;
  • connection speed; and
  • operating system.

Analysis of this usage data enables Perth Zoo to make its sites more useful to visitors.

No attempt will be made to identify visitors or their browsing activities except in the event of an investigation or the need to determine details related to a security breach or other inappropriate activity or as otherwise specified in this Policy.

 2. Collection of Personal Information

Perth Zoo may collect personal information about you during your dealings with us.

We collect personal information required for our business functions, which include:

  • Fulfilling donation and e-ticketing transactions;
  • Delivering follow-up customer service; and
  • Maintaining voluntary Perth Zoo user account profiles.

We may ask you for personal information at other times when you visit the Perth Zoo website. This may include, but is not limited to, when you:

  • Enter contests or join promotions; or
  • Respond to a survey.

If you elect to donate to Perth Zoo's Wildlife Conservation Action or make an e-ticketing purchase, the personal information collected will include, but is not limited to:

  • Name;
  • Residential address;
  • Postal address;
  • Email address;
  • Telephone number(s); and
  • Credit card details.

Please note: Credit card details are NOT stored on the Perth Zoo website. Transactions are processed through Perth Zoo’s merchant gateway.

If you elect to create or update a Perth Zoo website user account, Perth Zoo will collect personal information necessary to:

  • Make future transactions more efficient by pre-populating existing personal information securely stored on the Perth Zoo servers; and
  • Analyse your user history to enable Perth Zoo to improve the website experience for you through improved products and services.

Personal information collected by Perth Zoo will only be:

  • Collected by lawful and fair means;
  • Used for a lawful purpose; and
  • Collected with your consent.

If we ask for your personal information for a secondary reason, like marketing, we will either ask you directly for your expressed consent, or provide you with an opportunity to say no. If, after you opt-in, you change your mind, you may withdraw your consent for us to contact you and for our continued collection, use or disclosure of your information.  3. Access and Amendment to Personal Information

Customers may access and amend their personal information in the following ways:

  • creating and logging into a website user account; or
  • written request to Perth Zoo.

We will respond to written requests within twenty eight (28) days of the receipt of the request at the offices of Perth Zoo.

Perth Zoo may impose a charge on providing access to the personal information, depending on the nature of the request.  Perth Zoo will not confirm any changes have been made unless specifically requested to do so.

 4. Email and Feedback Information

If you subscribe to any services on the Perth Zoo website or provide any comments or feedback via email then your email address and other personal information you may provide will be maintained on our mailing lists.

Any email correspondence sent to us will be retained as required by the  State Records Act 2000 (WA) and other relevant laws and subject to this, when you email us:

  • We will record your email address;
  • We will use your email address for the purpose for which you provided it;
  • We will not use your email address for any other purpose; and
  • We will not disclose it to another party without your consent (though from time to time we may disclose your personal information to a party acting on behalf of Perth Zoo).  

5. How we capture information

Perth Zoo uses cookies when you visit its website.

A cookie is a piece of data sent from a website and stored in a user’s web browser while a user is browsing a website. When the user browses the same website in the future, the data stored in the cookie can be retrieved by the website to notify the website of the user’s previous activity.

Cookies have no way of disclosing your name or any personal information. Most browsers can be set to accept or reject cookies. You can choose to adjust your browser to reject cookies or to notify you when they are being used.

Below is a list of cookies that Shopify Inc who hosts the online Zoo Shop, uses. You may elect to opt-out of cookies.

  • session_id, unique token, sessional, allows Shopify to store information about your session (referrer, landing page, etc);
  • shopify_visit, no data held, persistent for 30 minutes from the last visit, used by our website provider’s internal stats tracker to record the number of visits;
  • shopify_uniq, no data held, expires midnight (relative to the visitor) of the next day, counts the number of visits to a store by a single customer;
    cart, unique token, persistent for 2 weeks, stores information about the contents of your cart;
  • secure_session_id, unique token, sessional; and
  • storefront_digest, unique token, indefinite, if the shop has a password, this is used to determine if the current visitor has access.

 6. How we use the information we collect

Perth Zoo primarily uses the personal information that it collects to fulfil the requested transaction or to provide follow up customer service.

Perth Zoo may disclose your personal information to specialist service providers, which it uses from time to time. This may include, but is not limited to, mail distribution services (acting on Perth Zoo’s behalf) and data analysis specialists. We use confidentiality agreements and other contractual obligations to protect your personal information.

Your information may also be used to:

  • respond to your comments and questions;
  • resolve your support incidents; and
  • send you related information.

Perth Zoo and its service providers also use your personal information to support, maintain, protect and improve the website, including by:

  • understanding and enhancing your experience of the website; and
  • protecting, investigating and deterring fraudulent, unauthorised or illegal activity.

Information collected may be disclosed to and used by those to whom Perth Zoo must (by law) disclose your information (e.g. a court or tribunal, or another government body).

We may also use your information to keep you informed about special promotions, events and offers relevant to Perth Zoo and its membership and sponsorship programs. In addition, we may use your information for research and the planning and development of products and services.

From time to time we may share de-identified information with approved business partners for analysis and research and development purposes.

 7. How we protect the information we collect

Online transactions are supported by secure server technology (Thawte SSL Web Server Certificates). The technology used by Shopify encrypts your personal financial information before it is transmitted over the Internet.  8. Third Party Providers

In general, the third-party providers used by us and Shopify will only collect, use and disclose your information to the extent necessary to allow them to perform the services they provide to us and Shopify.

However, certain third-party service providers, such as payment gateways and other payment transaction processors, have their own privacy policies in respect to the information we are required to provide to them for any purchase-related transactions. For these providers, we recommend that you read their privacy policies so you can understand the manner in which your personal information will be handled by these providers.

In particular, please note that certain providers may be located in or have facilities that are located a different jurisdiction than either you or us. Accordingly, if you elect to proceed with a transaction that involves the services of a third-party service provider, then your information may become subject to the laws of the jurisdiction(s) in which that service provider or its facilities are located.

 9. Security

To protect your personal information, Shopify takes reasonable precautions and follows industry best practices to make sure it is not inappropriately lost, misused, accessed, disclosed, altered or destroyed.

If you provide Shopify with your credit card information, the information is encrypted using secure socket layer technology (SSL) and stored with an AES-256 encryption. Although no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure, Shopify follows all PCI-DSS requirements and implements additional generally accepted industry standards.

 10. External links

Some websites that are linked to the Perth Zoo website may collect personally identifiable information about you when you access or utilise those links. When you leave Perth Zoo’s website you are no longer protected by Perth Zoo’s privacy provisions.

 11. Changes to this Privacy Policy

The Policy may change from time to time. If you continue to use the website, the changed Policy will apply from the time it was changed.  The current Policy is available at www.perthzoo.com.au.

12. Complaints

If you consider that Perth Zoo has breached the provisions of this Policy, please provide details of the circumstances in writing to Perth Zoo.

We will endeavour to respond to such a complaint within twenty eight (28) days of its receipt at the offices of Perth Zoo.
